Specifying furniture species from one inventory

Tzalam, mahogany, cedar and the darker Mesoamerican woods — how we match color, movement and machining to indoor furniture.

Indoor furniture is where most people first meet this catalog: a table top, a run of cabinets, a veneer face that has to sit still in a heated room. We start with the job, not the Latin name. How wide is the panel? Is it a show face or a structure? Does the client want a warm red, a brown that goes gold, or a near-black line?

Tzalam, mahogany and cedar cover a lot of that ground. Denser species step in when the piece will take abuse — restaurant tables, commercial casework, stairs that are furniture as much as architecture. Prefabricated parquet is not what we mean when we say “best for” on a furniture card; that line is for solid work.

Write with the dimensions and the finish system. We will tell you which boards we would pull first.
